Why are studs required for some shower doors?

Sliding shower door and bathtub shown in bathroom

For warranty and safety reasons, it is required to install our shower doors directly into wall studs. This will provide strong support for the weight of the glass door panels. Especially on frameless doors, where there is less metal surrounding the panels, sufficient support is essential to support the heavy glass panels.
On most of our models, the glass door will be supported by rollers and a top track. By drilling the top track and collar brackets into studs, the weight of the glass doors will have stable support.

If the provided screws are not long enough to reach your studs, you’ll need to purchase longer screws that go ½ to ¾ inches (1.3 to 1.9 cm) into the thickness of the studs from your local hardware store.

Where should these studs be located?

**PLEASE NOTE: Stud placement varies by door. Please refer to your installation guide for exact measurements.

Ideally, your enclosure should have studs behind the side walls, more or less in alignment with the sill of the enclosure (as in the image above). Most Delta® Shower Doors require stud placement to be 1-½ to 2-½ inches (3.8 to 6.4 cm) from the front surface of sill. Please refer to the specific installation requirements for a shower or bathtub door before purchasing.
